Sembang TechEd 2007

I was notified of this event by Nuffnang last weekend and since it's by Microsoft and it's absolutely free (considering that the actual TechEd 2007 SEA costs a freakin RM1299!) ... go la. :P I don't consider myself to be a tech blogger although i do highlight some technological (read: geek stuff) once in a while in my blog entries.

We arrived late at the event...one hour late to be exact because of some "unforseen circumstances".....LOL! So the first part of the event featuring Microsoft's Silverlight technology (don't know whats the hype about this....it's basically just another one of Microsoft's ways of trying to win some market share from Adobe i guess) had already finished by the time we registered at the entrance. Btw, it was held at the Bangkok Jazz Bar in Chulan Square. Quite a cool place to chill out for a tech event... dont you think so?

To not bore anyone who's reading this entry with all the technical mumbo jumbos and whatnots, i'll just briefly explain what was highlighted. After showcasing Silverlight, there was Popfly. No... it's not an action of killing flies...hahah. Rather it's something you can use to create mashups using Silverlight. The demo was pretty cool and interestingly conducted by Rohan Thomas from Microsoft Malaysia. It's still in private alpha (i think) and not released to the masses yet so nothing to shout about currently.

Moving on, there was Microsoft Home Server. Now this is something i would possibly consider using in the future. Well it's only useful for windows users anyway. Those on other OSes... tough luck. haha. Anyway this technology is just like a central server to host and backup files.... a fileserver la. Not really a new technology.... but the guy who presented this was funny. His name is Chewy Chong and he hails from Singapore.

The last thing on the agenda was an overview of Microsoft Robotics Studio but i wasnt too keen on all that. To be honest..at some point i nearly fell asleep. Oops? hehe. What's it about?...probably Microsoft's way of trying to take control of the world by using robots. hahaha. Juz kidding.

Now, the cool part of the event was....

The food.... lots of food! Mmmm...
and the free prizes to be won!... but then again we didn't win anything. There were supposed to be like... 35 nuffnangers there. And lots of them either didnt turn up or went home halfway... I think there were less than 20 ppl at the end... and we STILL didnt win anything (prizes were given out in a lucky draw style).. what are the odds wei? Oh well. :(

So then we decided to just have fun and bring the ISP and pose with the ppl over there instead. Minor publicity..but heck, it's still publicity right? hahahahah.

Btw, we sat at the same table as Timothy Tiah but did not recognize him at all. Later found out that he owns Nuffnang. Paiseh paiseh... :P

Finally - Nic (or whoever from the Microsoft team), if you're reading this... can i have the prizes please?... pretty please? hehe.
